As a staff, we were excited have Professor Ibram X. Kendi share how we can continue our work towards becoming an antiracist school. This award-winning author and one of the 100 most influential people of 2020, as named by Time Magazine, led an illuminating conversational session with leaders and faculty members within the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) community.
Dr. Kendi spoke about our important job as educators to differentiate between being “not racist”, or blind to color, and “antiracist”; as well as what our schools can do to ensure the longevity of an antiracist mission. Another suggestion from his thought-provoking webinar was to consider a baseline of definitions to guide conversations- thus providing a common language. As educators, we know that a framework is always helpful for growth and understanding.
West End Day School will continue to express our commitment to a culture of antiracism; and we will share with our students that we are continuing to learn, as well.
