This past Tuesday, the Parent Rights in Education Bill, commonly referred to as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill passed in the Florida Senate. We are horrified, saddened, and deeply concerned about the impact of this homophobic and transphobic law. As educators, it is our duty and commitment to always provide a safe space where students feel they can be open about their own self-expression and feel affirmed & supported within their identities. A school must be a place where children can feel safe, explore, and grow. This law is dangerous for everyone, but most specifically for those within the LGBTQ+ community. We Say Gay.
We stand with all those in Florida who are immediately impacted by this anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and are deeply concerned about the impact this will have on an already marginalized community. This does not affect those just in Florida and WEDS is taking immediate action to make sure our students, families, and greater community hear that no matter who you are, you matter, and you belong. We Say Gay.
Our priority is sending a clear message that we do not support any laws that deny equal rights to underrepresented groups. As part of our commitment to taking action, we will continue teaching our children about acceptance of themselves and others - We Say Gay.
Since its conception, WEDS has believed that mental health and learning go hand in hand. This year, our focus has been on evaluating how our community feels we all belong and celebrating our most authentic selves. This law is meant to other, outcast, and outwardly state that certain groups do not belong and should be punished for something that, in our firm belief, should be celebrated. At WEDS, everyone belongs, and We Say Gay. LOUDLY. WITH PRIDE!
Our belief that all people need to feel they belong has never felt more salient than now. Below we wanted to share resources with you on how you and your family can take action by supporting the LGBTQ+ community:
- Support GLSEN, whose chief belief is that every student has the right to a safe, supportive, and LGBTQ+ inclusive education.
- Utilize The Trevor Project as a source to provide information & support to LGBTQ+ youth 24/7, all year round.
- Educate ourselves and get involved with the Human Rights Campaign, who empower LGBTQ+ families to have the freedom to live their truth without fear and with equality under the law.
The Entire WEDS Community Stands in Solidarity and With Pride,
Head of School
