We are committed to fostering a sense of inclusion and belonging. We share this article from Education Week as a reminder that our choices- no matter how big or small- impact those around us. Halloween can be a time that highlights cultural appropriation; and while most Halloween costumes are harmless, some are not. Let's have these challenging conversations, get a better understanding of appropriation vs. appreciation, and remember that "cultures are not a costume."
Our students and teachers had some thoughtful dialogue about this complex and very charged topic. Teachers asked reflective questions and watched a video from Teen Vogue that further reinforced this idea that "My Culture is NOT a Costume."
We hope you have a wonderful Halloween - and continue to think about how your choices can impact those around you.
