Celebrating Black History Month and Black Lives Matter Week of Action

This year, we kicked off Black History Month with the National Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action. BLM at Schools is guided by 13 principles and teachers highlighted these principles with our students throughout the week. At WEDS, we believe that Black History is American History. Our curriculum has expanded and evolved to ensure that we not only hold true to this belief during Black History Month, but we also continue to take opportunities to honor and celebrate Black History with activities, discussions, and lessons throughout our school year. In addition to many lessons, discussions, and projects, students studied and brought to life Black artists, musicians, and important figures during our Fine Arts Exhibit & Performance, which was centered around the Harlem Renaissance. We took time to celebrate Black Joy while listening to music made popular during the Harlem Renaissance and reading stories from Black Boy Joy by Kwame Mbalia. We were even lucky enough to hear from local Harlem restaurant entrepreneur, Melba Wilson, about her life growing up in Harlem and how the neighborhood has influenced her restaurant!
