Kids Helping Kids: Let’s Give Families What They Need from the Start

Our students really delivered- in more ways than one! We are thrilled to share that our West End Day School Student Council was featured in No Kid Hungry New York’s HUNGER HEROES Blog

This is how it started: #GivingTuesday is a time where we (more than ever) highlight the importance of thinking outside of ourselves and making an altruistic impact. Our Student Council engaged in a thoughtful process and systematic approach when determining how West End Day School could take on this task this year.

After identifying community needs and determining our school’s capacity to address them, a needs assessment led our Student Council to this idea: let’s support and nurture families from the start. This framework brought us to Rachel Sabella, Director of No Kid Hungry New York. Rachel met with our Student Council and spoke about one crucial need in our more vulnerable communities being baby supplies- particularly diapers, wipes, and formula. Rachel then guided us to Mireille Massac, Community Relations Manager and director of the food pantry at the Child Development Support Corporation (CDSC). The CDSC's mission is to empower families so they can live successfully in today's society.

The action plan was this: West End Day School, guided by the Student Council, hosted a Baby Supplies Drive at our school. We were able to collect 60 boxes of diapers, 70 packages of wipes, and 10 containers of formula. That's about 3,000 diapers for babies and toddlers in need! We'll say it again and again...our community is the best there is.

We are so grateful for everyone that helped our initiative come to life. See the Student Council in Action Here! and how they delivered all of these items, first-hand, to the CDSC in Brooklyn, NY.
